I have struggled for many years with being comfortable in my own skin. Even when I was a size 5, I had areas of my body that I tried to hide and I used clothes strategically to hide certain things. Sometimes I used clothes to hide my belly pooch while other times I have used clothes to hide my tattoos. So to answer “Do Clothes Matter?”, I would say yes, but probably not in the way you think.
Do Clothes Matter?
The obvious answer is that yes, we shouldn’t leave our house naked unless that’s your thing and you live in a nudist colony. Then you go be your beautiful naked self and rock that! I’ma gonna stay over here, clothed ’cause that’s my thing, lol.
The issue has more to do with the type of clothes we put on than whether the clothes actually matter. Here’s the thing, I sell women’s clothes and see this almost daily. Many women feel, like I do, that they need to hide their arms, legs, belly, boobs, etc. They use clothes in an attempt to feel more comfortable in their own skin.
Guess what, clothes are meant to enhance and decorate your body, not your closet. If you feel more comfortable hiding certain areas of your body with clothes, that’s OK. But understand this, you are perfectly beautiful as you are at this very moment!!!! Do not change who you are what you look like because some asshole said shit. Be comfortable in the skin you are in, and if you are not, then start the process to change that but know that your current self deserves love too!
As I said before, “clothes are meant to decorate your body, not your closet”. Buy clothes that fit your current body and that make you feel beautiful. Clothes are accessories and an extension of your personality. I know we don’t always get to wear what we want due to our jobs, but you are only at work for part of the day but that doesn’t mean you can’t still rock who you are.
I used to be in the military and had a uniform that I wore every day. But on my days off, I wore eclectic, colorful pieces because that’s my thing. Now that I sell clothes, I sometimes get “dressed” up and wear dresses and skirts and make sure my makeup is on point because that’s how my mood is that day. On other days, I am in loungewear or exercise clothes with no makeup and that’s OK too. These are both accurate representations of who I am in that moment.
The next time you go shopping, focus on what makes you feel beautiful. Don’t focus on the size. Also, if you love the piece, but know that you won’t wear it – for love of all that is holy, Don’t Buy It!!!! Yes, the women who sells clothes is telling you NOT to feel pressured to buy clothes! I know how some sales ladies can be. Trust your gut and remember that you are decorating your body, not your closet!
If you need help in finding clothes that you love, I would love to help you! Ultimately, my goal is for every woman to feel beautiful in the skin they are in! #authenticallybeyoutiful
